A Digital Product Passport is a structured, machine-readable record describing a product's identity, composition, compliance and lifecycle. Under the EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR, Regulation (EU) 2024/1781), it will become mandatory for most product categories placed on the EU market, phased in through delegated acts.
The ESPR entered into force on 18 July 2024. The first Working Plan (April 2025) prioritizes textiles and apparel, furniture, tyres, mattresses, iron & steel and aluminium; sector-specific delegated acts phase in from 2026 through 2030. The battery passport is already mandatory from 18 February 2027 under Regulation (EU) 2023/1542. Pilot now, comply on schedule.

The ledger provides evidentiary proof of integrity and time of existence through hash-linked, timestamped records.
